警視庁は6月27日、母親である延子さん（享年75）の自殺を手助けしたとして、歌舞伎俳優の市川猿之助（本名・喜熨斗孝彦、きのしたかひこ、47）容疑者を自殺ほう助の疑いで逮捕した。猿之助容疑者は逮捕後の調べに「両親が自殺する手助けをしたのに間違いありません」と容疑を認め、「両親の後を追って私も自殺するつもりでした」と供述しているという。

事件について振り返ると、5月18日午前10時18分、東京都目黒区の自宅で両親と猿之助容疑者が倒れているのをマネージャーが発見し、119番通報した。
「マネージャーは2階の床で、猿之助容疑者の父親である段四郎さん（享年76）と母親の延子さんが横たわっているのを発見しました。一方の猿之助容疑者は半地下の自室のクローゼットの中で、首を吊った状態で目を閉じていました。延子さんはすでに死後硬直が始まっており、段四郎さんも搬送先の病院で死亡が確認されました。
猿之助容疑者は、“最愛の人物”とされるM氏に宛てて〈愛するM♡大好き 次の世で会おうね〉とスケッチ用キャンバスに書き残していたうえ、喜熨斗孝彦という本名で書いた遺書には、M氏を養子にして遺産のすべてを相続させる、と書かれていたことも話題になりました」（全国紙社会部記者）
猿之助容疑者は事件後、自殺の恐れがあることから精神科病院に強制入院させられていたが、警視庁による複数回の任意聴取を受けており、「週刊誌報道（＊「女性セブン」が猿之助容疑者のセクハラやパワハラを報じた）があり、みんなでさよならすることにした」「3人で死んで生まれ変わろうと話し合い、両親が睡眠薬を飲んだ」などと当時の状況を説明している。
さらに、「自分が処方されていた睡眠薬を、両親に渡した」「楽に死ねるよう、両親にビニール袋をかぶせた」などとも発言していたという。社会部記者が続ける。

「猿之助容疑者の供述通り、両親の死因は、睡眠導入剤のサイレースと微量のレンドルミンを服用したことによる “向精神薬中毒”の疑いが強い、というものでした。猿之助容疑者は逮捕後の聴取にも、容疑を認めて取り調べにも素直に応じています」
しかし、“Xデー”に至るまでにはさまざまな障壁があり、発生から1カ月以上の時間を要した。容疑者の一部の不可解な行動から、一時期は「殺人」罪の適用といった声も上がるほど捜査当局は疑念の目を向け続けたという。前出とは別の全国紙社会部記者が解説する。
なぜ睡眠薬の包装や被せたビニール袋を処分したのか
「これだけ有名な芸能人であれば逮捕といった強制捜査に踏み切らずに、任意で進めることもできたはずです。しかし、猿之助容疑者が“証拠を隠滅”していたことから当局の心証は悪かったといいます」
“証拠隠滅”とは、猿之助容疑者が睡眠薬の包装や、自ら被せたというビニール袋を処分していたことを指している。
「自分の処方薬を手渡したうえに、ビニール袋を両親に被せていることから自殺ほう助罪が成り立つのは自明です。ただ、心中事件で生き残った人が同罪に問われることはよくありますが、証拠はそのまま残っていることが多い。自らも死のうとしていて、隠す必要がありませんからね。
しかし、猿之助容疑者は自宅に放置したり、家のゴミ箱に捨てるのではなく、わざわざゴミ捨て場まで持って行っている。自らも薬を服用していたものの、致死量を飲んだにもかかわらず奇跡的に助かったというよりも、最初から死ぬ気がなかったのではないかとも思えるほどの量しか飲んでいなかったようです」（同前）
一方、早期逮捕で不可解な点も含めた事件の全容解明を目指した警視庁に対し、検察側は慎重な姿勢を崩さなかった。
