オールスター戦が開催されたシアトルを本拠地とするマリナーズのレジェンドで、米国野球殿堂入りしているケン・グリフィー氏（５３）が読売新聞の取材に応じ、投打の二刀流での活躍を続けるエンゼルスの大谷について「彼は特別な人間」と高く評価した。
大谷翔平「思い通りでなかった」、味方失策に両膝に手を置き…今季ワーストタイ５失点で５敗目
大リーグ歴代７位の通算６３０本塁打を誇るグリフィー氏。大谷が６月に６２年ぶりのア・リーグタイ記録となる１５本塁打を放ったことについて、「見ていてとても楽しい。特別なアスリートだ」と語る。
オールスターに１３度選出されたグリフィー氏は、ファンから受ける支持の重みや名誉を知る一人。大谷がア・リーグ最多の票を獲得したことについて「野球を愛する人たちは、それがどれほど特別なことかを知っている」と、ほほえんだ。
グリフィー氏は２００９～１０年、イチロー氏とプレーした。大谷との共通点について、「イチローは投手もできたけど、やらせてもらえなかったね」と冗談を交えながらその高い才能を認め、「２人とも、どの時代でも、どのレベルでもプレーできる選手だ」と語った。
